A tablet-focused reservation management system for restaurants.

Challenge

We were tasked with creating an innovative graphical interface for handling reservations, as well as an interface optimized for tablets for all more traditional functionalities. Everyone is busy in the restaurant business. We had to plan an application in a way that would optimize the speed of interaction.

One of the requirements was that as a SaaS system, aleno should be adjustable to the needs of both singular restaurants and groups of them, either manually or through the inheritance mechanism.

We were asked to be able to release modifications requested by restaurants to live server within one week.

During later stages of development we focused on optimization of a SaaS system for larger traffic.

In time, the system grew with multiple advanced functionalities.

Story

We entered the project after a prototype version. The first phase of the project was focused around rapid development and adjustment, based on the feedback that our client was receiving from restaurants onboarded in a pilot program.

With the use of Canvas we created an innovative graphical interface for reservation management. We based back-end on Meteor/MongoDB and front-end on React. Meteor’s reactivity allowed us to create a fluent experience for the staff, as all inputs were visible in the application with no delay.

Once a list of core functionalities was set, we focused on preparing a robust architecture and development process for the project. We set up a Continuous Integration environment. QA process ensured good quality standards.

The project was built with the use of a Scrum process, with addition of fast-track approach. This process allowed us to have rapid release cycles and made it possible to react for urgent feature requests made eg. by restaurant networks.

The application was built with iPad-first approach, as a hybrid application, which is operable on the Web as well.

During late phases of the project we focused on optimization and extending the list of tools available for restaurants. One of the key features was a Wordpress version, whose goal was to help promoting the system by further lowering the entry barrier for new users.
