Client asked us to create a platform that would allow for readers to have a direct contact with the author once they buy a book. They had to have a possibility to suggest modifications to a book. This would make books more community-driven and thanks to community updates would make them live longer.
We decided to use Etherpad - a precursor of Google Docs editor - for book creation process. This allowed us to support multiple people modifying book at once. We optimized Etherpad in the process. We designed multiple new functionalities for editor. Some of them are: video and audio support, comments, likes, shares.
We introduced two modes of book editing. One, based on Etherpad is reserved for authors and their close cooperatives. Second one is based on comments that readers can attach to a book and which authors can review through a separate list.
Website supports book store, as well as community features. Readers can share most liked phrases with each other. They can discuss with authors through a real-time updated forums and chats. We implemented cover editor based on Canvas, where users can make simple modifications and remarks to book’s cover. After creation, books can be published on Bookspace, as well a exported to most popular formats, or published on Kindle store.
